If you have a dog and you had to leave town for about a month on a business trip and couldn't bring your dog what would you truthfully do? Would you call a pet-sitting business? How can I get customers? I have in the past. However, I prefer the pet-sitter to come to my home and feed my dog, take her for a walk, etc.. You really need to network. Talk to the people you know that have pets, offer the service. Talk to your vet — they probably get a lot of requests. Once you've been able to do this service for a few people, let them know you're always looking for new customers. If they are satisfied with your performance, they will recommend you to friends.

I want to start a dog walking business for summer but how do i advertise it around my local area? also what do people exspect from a dog walker, i mean apart from walking their dog! My daughter started by leaving cards at the Vets, in Supermarket's notice boards, newsagents, shop windows and the local pub! She moved on to the local newspaper and then into Yellow Pages. She started from the dog walking to feeding them when owners asked her (£5 a visit), which went on to feeding cats and doing litter trays if owners were away. Then she began taking in small caged animals into her own home (budgies and bunnies, etc) She eventually had a web site – with letters of recommendation from satisfied clients. Took other pet carers onto her books – they were self-employed at £5 per hour but she received a booking fee. Then she emigrated and sold the business for a 4-figure sum! Best of luck in your venture – watch out Richard Branson!!

I am looking into a career with dogs and I’ve visited a dog sledding tour guide service in Albert Canada and now I’m hooked and want to get a career linked with dog sledding. There isn’t really much info as a career on this type of job but I’m guessing training with a tour guide service would benefit for whatever job I wanted to pick as a dog musher or a trainer for dog sledding. Is there a college course or courses that someone would take to go into these careers or is it mostly apprenticeship? For any business you want to open classes in business management apply. You should spend a year or two apprenticing under a musher… or maybe a year each for 3 mushers in different geographical areas. This is a year around 24/7 type job. Seeing how it works and how much work it is and THEN deciding if its something you cannot live happily without doing is key.

New York City is the fashion mecca for designers, but not just for humans, now it’s gone to the dogs. It’s a catwalk of a different sort for these fashionista dogs. It’s a huge display of pet fashions and it’s one sure way to be the cat’s meow without being feline. The fashions are the ultimate in canine couture where they feature everything from the Park Avenue Pooch to the junkyard dog. And, bling they have. Many top designers are getting into the business. Why shouldn’t they as the dog business is barking up the right tree as a 36 billion dollar industry.. making it top dog over the toy and candy business. What’s in – “mommy and me” collections – where humans are dressing in matching attire with their dogs. Sheryl, the DogSexpert also talks with designers about how their fashions influence relationships between humans and pooch. He sees the pet food recall disaster as cutting to the core of the pet industry. “…what’s been moving pet food sales forward is marketers’ success in trading consumers up to higher-priced food touted as top quality.” He then goes on to show that many of these “super-premium” brands were made in the same facilities as the tainted brands… Here are some super-premium holisitic pet foods NOT involved in the recall – either ingredients or manufacturing facility.
I just received my advanced copy of the June edition of Pet Business Magazine and it has a great 4 page article written by Jane Bick, DVM the new product development guru at HealthyPetNet. She quotes packaged facts data that shows sales of natural/holistic dog and cat foods topped $520 million in 2005 — with sales of over $1 BILLION projected by 2010. I am planning on capitalizing on this HUGE trend. The marketing program is in place, the mentoring is in place, the business model is tested and proven –> I will create over 200 6-Figure Petrepreneurs by 2008. Do you want to be on my team?
Every pet related business should consider offering gift certificates to help expand their customer base. While gift certificates contribute to only a small portion of overall sales for most pet related businesses, they may pay dividends for years to come because they help lure new customers and keep existing customers coming back for more. “They are money right back in your pocket,” says Michelle Broaderson, the owner of BoneMaMa, a specialty dog treat bakery in Mill Creek, Wa. – with an interesting start-up story. Broaderson used gift certificates creatively to fund the start-up of her new venture. “Instead of begging banks or family for start-up funding, I used $50 of my savings to bake several batches of tasty treats and used them as an enticement to get everyone I knew to purchase gift certificates that I printed on my computer. It was a great way to generate the $1,500 I needed to fully stock my kitchen and purchase the supplies needed to get up and rolling. Those initial gift certificate holders have stayed with me…” Why Offer Gift Certificates? Customers come into retail shops seeking gift certificates and their higher-tech sibling, gift cards, for a variety of reasons. First of all, they are an easy gift for any pet lover. “The bottom line is that giving one is easy, and you can’t really make a mistake buying one,” Broaderson says. “It’s also a gift that can be large or small because they can be given in any amount from $5 to $500,” she says. “We don’t put an expiration date on them and they can be used either online or at any of our retail locations,” says Tawnia Zannger, a partner at Bow-Wow Bakery, a baker in Palm Springs. Second, recipients enjoy receiving them as much as people love to give them. “Everyone is always happy when they present a gift card,” says Jennifer Grant, owner of Something to Chew On, a retail shop in Laguna Niguel, Calif. “They buy whatever tickles their fancy.” “Most customers use gift cards to buy items to spoil their pets instead of buying essentials, such as food or other practical purchases,” Zannger says. Many of Grant’s clients who buy gift cards aren’t even pet owners themselves. “Their friend or their clients love their dogs but they have no idea what to get them,” Grant says. Offering gift certificates is another form of advertising in the community, says Stew Boots, owner of PetPourri, a baker/retailer in Dublin, Tx. “A lot of people come in and say, ‘I never knew you were here.’” While sales of certificates may only contribute to a small percentage of overall sales, Boots and other baker/retailers wouldn’t consider dropping them from their inventory. “Gift certificates are only 1 percent or 2 percent of my overall sales for the year,” Boots says. “But we try to be a full-service retail store and bakery, and gift certificates are just one more thing that customers want, so we carry them.” Grant agrees that these products should be seen as an added service that builds your business over time. “I really feel that being a small boutique bakery is about building a relationship with the customer,” she says. “There are a lot of things that I do that are a lot of work, but it increases the customers’ commitment to me.” Grant has seen sales of gift cards increase by 50 percent since her store opened two years ago, without her putting much effort into promoting them. “Sales started out slowly, but have increased over time,” she says. She has recently put a counter mat down near the register to alert customers that she carries gift cards. “I expect it will increase even more now that it will be right there in their faces,” Grant says. Dangling laminated gift certificates on a ribbon from the store’s ceiling has drawn a lot of attention for Boots. “We mostly do in-store promotions of our gift certificates,” he says. Advertising gift certificates on your store’s website may also remind customers to purchase them year-round for special occasions and holidays, Zannger says. The majority of gift certificates redeemed in Broaderson’s shop are issued to charities that come to her seeking donations, she says. “The certificate either goes to a new customer who then becomes a customer for the remainder of the time or it’s used by a returning customer who spends more than what the gift certificate is worth,” Broaderson says. -Doug Bertram
